Dressing GMA (MIG) Welds - I-CAR RTS

Nearly all GMA (MIG) welds require dressing. The goal of dressing GMA (MIG) welds is to make the surface flush. Gouging below the surface of the base metal not only looks bad, it weakens the steel. Keep this in mind whenever doing this process.

Re-Evaluation of Fatigue Curves for Flush Ground Girth Welds

Flush-grinding of a butt weld is an established method for improving its fatigue performance. However, the current fatigue design rules in various standards and codes for such welds are not based on fatigue test data from flush-ground girth welds but on data for joints between flat plates, much of which were obtained many years ago. The availability of fatigue test results has allowed .

When shouldn't you grind your welds? - Weld Talk Message .

Grinding is expensive. If the weld CAN be designed to be stronger than needed, it is cheaper and faster to do this than to grind out any potential stress risers. Full penetration welds are often ground, not just for cosmetic and fuctional reasons (flush surface needed in service), but to remove stress risers.

    Weld seam grinding : specializedtools

welding isn't just melting the metal, you actually add metal to the puddle and let it all solidify together. That means there's more there than you started with, but it's one piece of homogenous metal, so you can then grind it down to where it looks like there's no "seam" at all. Sorry if that wasn't clear.
